Why Mental Toughness Research and Practice Must Die: From Rhabdo to Current Findings

This presentation will be specifically tailored for SCCCs and MSCCs and will have a dual goal:

(a)Provide information about the latest research findings and how these findings -in relation with recent events- impact evidence-based practice for strength and conditioning professionals and

(b) Start a conversation about the future of MT research and practice in the field of strength and conditioning. In more detail, Dr. Stamatis will cover the following topics:

  • The elusive nature of Sport Psychology
  • Brief history of Mental Toughness in Sport
  • Recent events involving practitioners
  • Why anecdotally-based protocols are just not enough
  • How we can we move to empirically-based practices
  • Why psychological instruments don't work
  • Findings of past research efforts and current focus (including research done with MSCCs)
  • What can Sport Psychology do for the strength coach?
  • What can the strength coach do right now if he/she wants to design safer and more effective MT training protocols?
  • The presentation will end with Q&A.
