Steven Gortmaker

Assciate Director of Football Performance

Steven Gortmaker is in his 1st season as the Associate Director of Football Performance at Florida State University.

Gortmaker came to Florida after spending one year as the Associate Director of Football Strength and Conditioning at the University of Oregon. The former Oklahoma Sooner defensive back, who also served as a strength and conditioning assistant, has worked primarily with football programs. His 19-year journey through the coaching ranks included four years at Tennessee and four years at South Carolina and the 2000 Big XII Champions and the National Championship at Oklahoma.

The past season he was the Associate Director of Football Performance at Oregon and two years at the University of South Florida. Then 2 more years before that at the University of Southern Mississippi in the same capacity. While at Tennessee and South Carolina, Gortmaker served as the Associate Director of Football Strength and Conditioning. He served on staff with both Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley beginning in 2009 and joined the South Carolina staff with Steve Spurrier in 2004, where he served four seasons with him. He came to South Carolina from Kansas, where he served as Assistant Director of Football Strength and Conditioning for three seasons with Mark Mangino during the 2002-04 seasons.

From 2001-2002, Gortmaker served as the Head Football Strength and Conditioning Coach for Jack Harbaugh at Western Kentucky University. There he was responsible for implementing, directing, and supervising the strength, speed and conditioning programs for the WKU football team as they advanced to the 2001 1AA Playoffs.
Prior to joining the Western staff, Gortmaker served as a strength and conditioning coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1999-2001. He was considered one of the up-and-coming young strength coaches; Gortmaker was instrumental in preparing the 2000 Associated Press National Championship team at OU. In addition to winning the 2000 National Title, the Sooners were Big XII Champions in 2000 as well.

During his time on the Sooner staff, Gortmaker served as a strength and conditioning coach at Oklahoma during the 1999 season where he worked with the men and women's gymnastics, golf, softball, baseball, track & field, basketball and football programs. He was elevated to football strength and conditioning with the Sooners in 2000.

Gortmaker is a 1998 graduate of Oklahoma, where he earned his degree in Health and Sport Science. The White Deer, Texas, native played defensive back for the Sooners from 1995-98 and earned Academic All-Big XII honors along with being a Sooner Scholar-Athlete.

During his career as an athlete, Steve was fortunate to be trained by great coaches and influences like Joe Juraszek, Blair Prince, Scott Bird and Chris Dawson (Kansas State University). As an Athletic Performance Coach, He has had the opportunity to work with coaches like Jerry Schmidt (Texas A&M University), Corey Edmond (University of Kentucky), Mark Smith (Oklahoma State University), Aaron Ausmus, Bennie Wylie and Irele Oderinde (Florida State University).

He is married to the former Brooke Martin of Irmo, South Carolina and has a daughter, Mikaela and a son, Kanon.
