What It Takes To Be a Legend in the Field

Terry Wayne Jones, Sr. served as a Strength and Conditioning Coach at the?University of Alabama from 1988 to 2022. Jones, Sr. was a member of the Alabama Football strength and conditioning staff since the beginning of his career at the Capstone and worked in this capacity with all sports programs. He served as a member of the Crimson Tide staff for over 30 years until his retirement in June of this year. Coach Jones also received his degree at the University of Alabama. He was coached by the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant and played center and defensive tackle for the Crimson Tide from 1974-77. Alabama won three SEC Championships, two Sugar Bowl titles and the 1976 Liberty Bowl crown in those years. After Alabama, Jones was drafted in the 11th round by the Green Bay Packers where he played for 8 years as a Defensive Tackle and Nose Guard. When he returned to the University in 1988, he became an Assistant Strength Coach in the Coliseum Weight Room where he assisted in administering football strength-training programs and overseeing all of the sports utilizing the weight room. From 1992-1996, he served as an Assistant Strength Coach. His duties were to assist with the football program, the men's and women's basketball programs, the men's and women's track program as well as women's golf and gymnastics. From 1997 to 2000, he served as the Head Strength Coach. Throughout his tenure at?the Capstone, Jones has worked with the football, baseball, gymnastics, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s swimming, and men’s and women’s track & field teams, and has accumulated several SEC and National?Championships. Prior to his retirement, he worked with the return-to-play athletes to assist them in overcoming their injuries to get back on the playing field. In 2003, he was certified as a Master Strength & Conditioning Coach by the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association, which is the highest honor that can be achieved as a strength & conditioning coach. Terry is also well known for his expertise around the kitchen. Creating award winning Southern dishes, his gift and love for cooking and grilling has created a name for himself beyond the football and practice fields. He has been married for over 40 years to his wife Willie Mays Jones who practices law in Tuscaloosa. They have four wonderful children (Terry, Jr., Teresha, Alisha, and Jason). He is also the proud grandfather of 11 amazing grandchildren.
