Description:
Under the general direction of the Director for Athletics, the full-time Head Strength and Conditioning Coach/Physical Education (PE) Director will facilitate the strength and conditioning programs for all athletic teams, and oversee and refine the College’s Health and Wellness area of the undergraduate core curriculum. This position will oversee the PE program, which includes an existing catalog of activity courses, as well as wellness courses. The Coach will be responsible for hiring and assigning adjunct faculty to teach these specialized PE courses, and for working in collaboration with other departments on campus to advance health and wellness initiatives within the College community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

Coaching (40%)

Work directly with each head coach on strength and conditioning goals and objectives.
Schedule and oversee weight lifting sessions with all teams.
Provide coaching sessions for students (athletes and non-athletes), faculty and staff.
Work with athletic trainers on pre and post injury training.
Regularly assess athletes in power, strength, agility, and endurance.
Develop individual strength and conditioning/nutrition plans for athletes.
Other duties as assigned by Director of Athletics.
Director of Physical Education (40%)

Under the direction of the Provost, implement and refine the physical education curriculum required for Hood College undergraduate students.
Teach two courses in the PE department.
Hire and supervise adjunct faculty to teach activities and wellness courses.
Respond in a timely and professional manner to student concerns regarding PE courses as per existing college policy.
Oversee facilities needs in Gambrill Gym.
Work in partnership with Events Coordinator and Athletics to schedule PE classes in Gambrill Gym and Volpe Center.
Other duties relative to physical education as assigned by the Provost.
Wellness (20%)

Work in collaboration with the Director of Wellness to develop and implement wellness initiatives for faculty, staff, and students.
In direct support of campus wellness initiatives, create and implement new class offerings (yoga, cycling, swim aerobics, etc.) for faculty, staff, and students.
Work in collaboration with Director of Wellness on designing programs for community members.
Develop a fitness center model to offer revenue-generating memberships.

The following are required:

Proven integrity, leadership, and a thorough knowledge of strength and conditioning.
Experience working in and/or leading a physical education program in an academic setting.
A strong commitment and ability to motivate, teach, and counsel, academically qualified student-athletes.
A valid driver’s license.
A professional certification in strength and conditioning.

Education and Experience:

Must have a Master’s Degree in sports medicine, physical education, or similar field with experience teaching in and/or leading a physical education program in an academic setting. The candidate must have a proven record of successful coaching, with 2-3 years experience preferably at the collegiate level. Knowledge of NCAA Division III rules and regulations preferred. Strength and conditioning certification is required such as current standard first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillation (AED) certifications. Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions. Knowledge of current National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)or (CSCCa) Strength and Conditioning Professional Standards and Guidelines. Strong oral and written communication skills.

Technology Skills:

Candidate must be computer proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, such as, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc., and proficient with internet and email. Must have the ability to use available instructional technology resources to effectively teach in a manner conducive to classroom presentation including, but not limited to, use of audio visual equipment, computer, educational software, etc.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone. Ability to develop marketing or promotion materials. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents, or others.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to work with and apply basic mathematical concepts timely and accurately, either manually or by using a calculator.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.
