Jay Andress

Young Strength Coaches - Roundtable

Jay Andress is in his 16th year at Cornell University, serving as the Director since 2015. In his role as Associate Athletics Director, he supervises the strength and conditioning department consisting of 7 coaches who oversee the training needs of 37 varsity sports. Andress directly oversees football, men’s basketball, softball, and wrestling. Throughout his career he has also worked with women’s basketball, baseball, field hockey, women’s rowing, men’s tennis, and track & field. Coach Andress has been a vital contributor to the development and success of his teams and athletes. In 2010 the men’s basketball team won their third straight Ivy League Championship, ultimately advancing to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament. Andress contributed to Cornell wrestling becoming the winningest sport team in Ivy League history, with 12 championships under his guidance in addition to 11 EIWA championships. In NCAA Wrestling Championships his teams have never finished outside of the top 10, with 6 top 5 finishes. His wrestlers have won 12 individual National Championships and over 40 All-American honors. Andress’ teams have also won Ivy League Championships in women’s basketball, softball, and baseball. Many of his athletes from various sports have advanced to play professionally. Andress joined Cornell University following an internship at The University of North Carolina working under the guidance of MSCC Jeff Connors. While at UNC he assisted in coaching the Tar Heel football team consisting of several NFL draft picks, as well as the 2006 Final Four women's basketball team. Andress is a 2005 graduate of Bloomsburg University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, and a 2010 graduate of SUNY Cortland with a master’s degree in Sports Management. During his career he has earned certifications including CSCCa-MSCC, NSCA-CSCS, and USAW-Certified Sport Performance Coach. Andress resides in Ithaca with his wife Sara, son Logan, and daughter Riley.
