The Female Athlete: Unique Nutritional Challenges and Practical Recommendations
Dr. Kim Schwabenbauer, RDN, CSSD is a Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist (RDN) and a board-
Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD). She currently serves as the Sports Dietitian for the
Pittsburgh Steelers and an Associate Professor of Exercise Science at PennWest University — Clarion
Campus. Whether she is working with professional athletes, everyday athletes, or college students,
Kim believes that optimal performance can be achieved through a personalized approach to health and
wellness. Kim also runs a successful business, Fuel Your Passion, Sports Nutrition Counseling and
Endurance Coaching which focuses on motivating athletes to achieve their peak potential.
As a nationally recognized nutrition expert, Kim contributes to various media publications including
Triathlete, Women’s Running, USA Football, Inside Triathlon, Ironman.com and more. She's also
appeared on national television as a registered dietitian and coach for the hit TV show, MTV “Made,”
was a featured Dietitian on Zonya’s Healthbites on PBS, and has been highlighted on many local news
affiliates as a dietitian expert. Kim speaks nationally to executives, conference attendees, and
professional sports teams on nutrition, motivation, and best practices to fuel busy lifestyles with an
evidence-based approach that translates science into real-world experience. Kim’s personal research
focuses on the male and female athlete triad and its impact on performance.
As a former professional triathlete, Kim completed her first Ironman Triathlon (2.4-mile swim, 112-
mile bike, and 26.2-mile run) in 2008, and has since completed 18 Ironmans, including four
appearances at the Ironman World Championships in Kona Hawaii. In 2014, she was ranked top
twenty in the world among female professional triathletes. Kim received her Bachelor of Science in
Nutrition from Penn State University, a Master of Science in Exercise Science and her Doctorate in
Health Science and Exercise Leadership from California University of Pennsylvania. You can follow
