Challenges facing the strength and conditioning professional
Dr. Tredell Dorsey is in his fourth year as the Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Performance at Morgan State University.
Dr. Dorsey has 22 years of experience in the field, including 12 years as a head strength and condition coach at Lane College, Cleveland State University, Alabama State University, Delaware State University, and GA State University.
In May 2016, Dorsey was awarded the highest honor in his field when he was certified as a master strength and conditioning coach (MSCC) by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. He also holds certifications in USA Weightlifting (USAW), Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES), and USA Track and Field (USATF).
Dorsey also had stints at Georgia Tech and University of Central Florida. At the latter, Dorsey worked directly with the 2014 Fiesta Bowl Champions. Two out of the three years Dorsey coached at UCF, the Knights were the champions in the American Athletics Conference.
In addition to making meaningful impacts on football teams, Dorsey has served as the strength and conditioning coach for championship golf, basketball, and track teams. He believes in total athlete development. At Alabama State University he made a significant mark on the athletic department by effectively using strength and conditioning to reduce injuries, which resulted in a decrease in insurance claims. Dorsey also designed two strength and conditioning facilities at ASU. As a member of the senior athletics staff at Delaware State University, Dr. Dorsey assisted in the development of comprehensive life skills training workshops as well as implemented the University’s voter registration initiative. VOTE! DSU successfully registered all age-eligible student-athletes and worked with other departments to register members of the student body.
Beyond having solid experience in the collegiate environment, Dorsey served as the Director of Player Development at Velocity Sports Performance in Cordova TN. At Velocity, Dorsey trained elite and professional athletes and was responsible for supervising a staff of three; marketing the facility; and appearing on the local news station monthly to promote fitness. Dorsey secured and headed up the performance training contract for the Memphis Xplorers Arena II Football team.
As a sought-after expert in his field, Dr. Dorsey is an accomplished fitness/performance writer and is called upon several times a year to speak at various athletic performance events. He also served as the technical director for the 2004 Nike Grid Iron marketing campaign where he worked with Michael Vick, Brian Urlacher, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Larry Fitzgerald.
A native of Montgomery, Alabama, Dorsey earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island, his master’s degree from Springfield College, and his doctorate from Argosy University.
