Musculoskeletal Injuries: Untold Causes and Preventative Strategies

Arguably, time lost to injury has the most significant negative impact on team, individual, and coaching performance in athletics. As Strength & Conditioning Coaches, not only do we have a responsibility, but we should hold ourselves accountable to ensure our athletes’ training promotes performance and decreases their risk of injury. It is known that musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs) can be prevented, and if they are not, can lead to greater, season-ending injury such as ACL tears. So, why do so many athletes sustain MSKIs and is there more to the story than we’re often told? In this session, we will i) breakdown the neurophysiology behind MSKIs, ii) show how vital it is to understand how and why MSKIs happen, iii) discuss why many of the methods currently used to “prevent injury” may not actually map to the neurophysiology, and iv) discuss/demonstrate some key strategies that can prevent injury.
