Assessments & Alternatives in the Collegiate Setting

PRESENTATION SYNOPSIS

As strength coaches, we use verbal cues to instruct our athletes during drills and exercises with an emphasis on simplicity and relativity, creating an environment where the student athlete can be receptive and immediately make an attempt at improving poor body position, gaining an ideal range of motion, or even feeling certain musculature become engaged. Cueing is a large part of our overall communication with athletes while on the floor, making it a very important piece to the puzzle. The aim of this presentation is to gain a better understanding of why verbal cues may not work for every athlete due to the fact that poor structural integrity will compromise their ability to achieve certain positions. The presentation offers some basics covering on-the-fly assessment, exercise alternatives, and methods used to correct dysfunction.
