Raising the Bar: A Round Table Discussion on the Cares & Concerns of the Small College
This presentation will cover building and maintaining relationships, building and maintaining a training facility on a small or no budget as well as programming for multiple sports team with limited or no staff. Coach Basile will also cover the topic of building and developing a staff and maintaining the appropriate work/life balance.
James Prendergast has been in the field of strength and conditioning for over 10 years. He started his career at Hofstra University as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach in 2009. In 2014, Prendergast was promoted to Associate Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and in 2017 was named the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. Prendergast has worked with the men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, baseball, volleyball and wrestling teams during his tenure at Hofstra. He oversees the administration of the department and supervises two assistants and numerous interns, and has contributed to the development of teams and student-athletes that have won multiple CAA conference championships, numerous NCAA tournament appearances and multiple CAA players of the year. He currently works with the Pride men's basketball, men’s lacrosse, volleyball and wrestling teams.
Prendergast has organized and developed the first research-based sports performance screening protocol for Hofstra University. The testing includes strength and conditioning, athletic training, physical therapy and exercise science. The testing highlights any deficiencies that would leave an athlete more susceptible to injury which is then addressed in an injury prevention program.
