Lew Porchiazzo III

Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning Olym, University of Michigan

Lew Porchiazzo currently serves as Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic Sports following his promotion from Head Strength and Conditioning Coach in December 2021, having served in that capacity since August 2017. He joined the University of Michigan Olympic Sport Strength and Conditioning Staff as a Graduate Assistant in August 2009 while simultaneously pursuing his MS in Exercise Physiology from Eastern Michigan University. In December 2011, upon completion of his graduate studies, he was promoted to Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for Olympic Sports. Porchiazzo is currently responsible for the program design and implementation for Softball, Women's Gymnastics, and Men’s Soccer, and formerly for Women’s Rowing 2009-2013 and Field Hockey 2009-2015. Additionally, he serves as coordinator of the 25,000 sq. ft. Sports Performance Center Weight Room.

While at Michigan, Porchiazzo has been the Strength and Conditioning Coach for one National Championship Team: Women’s Gymnastics (2021) and 25 Big Ten Championships Teams: Field Hockey (2010 & 2011), Softball (2011-2016, 2018, 2019, & 2021), Women’s Gymnastics (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014-2020, 2022, & 2023), Men’s Soccer (2017), and Women’s Rowing (2012). During his tenure, he has worked with three individual national champions, four national most outstanding athlete of the year recipients, multiple Big Ten Athletes of the Year and Big Ten Medal of Honor recipients, over 70 All-Americans, and over 95 All-Big Ten honorees.

Prior to joining the Michigan staff, Porchiazzo completed a summer 2009 internship at Baylor University, where he assisted with football, women's soccer, and women's tennis. He also completed a five-month spring 2009 internship with the United States Olympic Committee at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. While at the OTC, Porchiazzo assisted with a variety of sports, including freestyle wrestling, greco-roman wrestling, women's freestyle wrestling, judo, modern pentathlon, pistol shooting, rifle shooting, shotgun shooting and figure skating.

During his undergraduate work at WPU, he was an offensive lineman on the Pioneer football team. Porchiazzo was voted team captain and twice earned NJAC All-Academic Team honors. He completed his BS in Exercise Science at WPU in 2009.

Additionally, he is active in the profession, presenting at several clinics and conferences, collaborating with other units on campus, and making various podcast and social media guest appearances.

Originally from Colonia, New Jersey, Porchiazzo currently resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan with his wife, Ashley Korn.
