Coach Hester, a native of North Carolina, was born and raised in Durham and attended Hillside High School.
In 1989, James earned a football scholarship at South Carolina State University under the legendary Coach Willie Jeffries, and was a 3 year starter as a Free Safety.
In 1998, James headed to the University of South Carolina to become the Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach there.
In 2002, he became the Head Strength Coach for Football at Alabama A&M University and remained there for 12 years.
In 2014, Coach Hester headed to the University of Texas to become the Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach for Football and reunite with his mentor Pat Moorer.
James is married to the former Telesa Thomas, and they have one son, James Owen Hester Jr.
