Speed Diagnosis: The Key to Linking Testing and Training
Duane Carlisle was hired the director of sports performance in February of 2011. As director, Carlisle oversees all aspects of high performance training for Purdue's 18 intercollegiate sports teams, and also serves as the head strength and conditioning coach for the Boilermakers' football team.
In his role as high performance coordinator for the sports performance department, Carlisle's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, staff development, training methodology, budget oversight and facility design.
Under the guidance of Carlisle and his staff, a revamped sports performance program helped support an overall departmental effort that led Purdue to one of the finest years in its athletic history in 2011-12.
He joined Purdue from the San Francisco 49ers, where he served as the head strength and conditioning coach for four years (2008-11). He initially started with the 49ers as an assistant strength and conditioning coach (2005-08) before taking over the program. He served under head coach and Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary in San Francisco.
Carlisle has additionally worked as a speed coach for the Philadelphia Eagles (2000-04) and spent two years as the speed development coordinator for the Tampa Bay Rays (1997-98).
He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland with an emphasis in physical education and economics , where he was also competed for the track and field team. Carlisle received his masters of exercise and sport science with an emphasis in Strength and Conditioning from Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia.
Carlisle is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He is also Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa), and is an CSCCa Approved Mentor. He holds Sport Performance Coach certification through U.S.A. Weight Lifting (USAW) and is a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).
He served on the Sports Performance Advisory Council with Under Armour (2008-11) and is a member of the NIKE SPARQ Advisory Board. Carlisle has also served as the head strength and conditioning coach ad LaSalle University and was an assistant track and field coach at Penn State. Carlisle has spoken for the Perform Better Functional Clinics for over 10 years and has been mentored by Mike Boyle, Johnny Parker, Bill Parcells' former head strength and conditioning coach and three-time Super Bowl winner, and Mike Woicik. His son, Amir, will be a sophomore running back at Notre Dame this fall.
